An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
