The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
