Social Media Influencers Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Slimming Medication

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering products of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.

Platform Response and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at home.

Within moments of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
